Hagia Sofia – Turkey

Hagia Sofia, the beginnings of Christianity and church building

Hagia Sofia, the beginnings of Christianity and church building

Hagia Sophia, one of the most celebrated Byzantine Architecture monument is magnificent in so many ways. It was once a church, then a mosque and now a museum. The beauty is in the outer proportions as well as the interior space. The clearstory windows, bringing down light on the byzantine marble columns and mosaics leave you speechless. Much is written and said about it, many have been inspired and have tried to copy it, the Blue Mosque across the park from it was built to rival this piece of architecture. The Blue Mosques is a wonderful piece of architecture, has a lightness, unlike it, Hagia Sopia has a quality that leaves you in a silence. One knows one is in the presence of the wise, and silence decends on you, leaving you to walk around and contemplate.
